The PM normally performs the approach setup. Roles can be reversed at the PF’s discretion. It is imperative that both pilots crosscheck the FMS and any tuned/Active ILS or Channel ID with the approach charts.

The setup is based on the principle of Build, Bug, and Brief. According to this principle, the PM loads the procedure and crosschecks the FMC database routing and restrictions against the appropriate charts, and sets bugs au besoin.

The PF then transfers control and checks the setup, including the FMC database routing and restrictions against the appropriate charts, before briefing the approach.

This technique allows both pilots to independently validate the FMC routing and restrictions against the published plates.

CAUTION
The vertical path defined by BARO VNAV is affected by
altimeter setting errors. For this reason, BARO VNAV is not
authorized unless a local field altimeter setting is available.
Flight crew members should make altimeter settings at
appropriate times or locations, and use a current altimeter
setting, particularly at times when pressure is reported or is
expected to be rapidly decreasing.
